Caltech students George Williams, John Eastment, and Albert Holm at the trail head of the Kaibab Trail to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. The photograph was taken by fellow hiker Jerry Austin. This adventure was during Caltech’s spring break in 1963 and we had driven all night from Pasadena.

The second photo was taken after we reached the Kaibab Bridge over the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. We slept that night on the concrete pads for picnic tables on the north side of the river. The next day we climbed back out of the canyon. It started to rain and that turned to snow as we got higher up. We slipped and slid, and finally, exhausted, reached the rim after dark.
