The Telescope Operations Center for the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite with Resident Astronomer Al Holm, Telescope Operator Ruth Ehlers and observer Ralph Bohlin. The IUE was in an orbit that ranged from 16,000 and 26,000 miles high. It’s geosynchronous orbit allowed it to be operated in real time by staff and observers from groundstations in the United States and Spain. IUE’s Telescope Operations Center was in building 21 at Goddard Space Flight Center. The telescope operations staff ran scripts that caused the telescope to be pointed, started exposures, and transmitted the images to antennas on the ground.
