Gail working as a campground host and cleaning one of the camp sites at Ike Kinswa State Park in Washington state in 2014.

In 2013, we began volunteering at state parks in parts of the country that we were interest in seeing. We would spend two months in the summer working half time for our camping site and spending much of the remaining time sightseeing. The parks where we volunteered were in Idaho, Washington, Utah, Oregon, Utah again, and Maine. Our duties varied according to the needs of the park. In Idaho, we gave talks about astronomy and found scorpios with black light flashlights. In Oregon, we were docents at the Heceta Head Lighthouse. In the other states, our primary duty was cleaning campsites to make them usable after the previous campers left. But sometimes we would also sell firewood to campers, take admission fees fom visitors, sell park paraphernalia, do trail maintenance, etc.
